1995 Range Rover Black Classic Soft Dash SWB
124,500 Miles on Chassis
This black short wheelbase model was already outfitted a bit to become an off-road vehicle, and we decided to stick with the aesthetic, with a few modern upgrades. Upon receiving the vehicle at our facility in Vermont we began the inspection. We discovered that the original 3.9L V8 was no good, and had been driven on blown head gaskets for too long. In our inventory of classics we had a 1995 LWB that was rotten on the exterior, but only had 89k miles on the strong 4.2L V8 engine. We elected to remove the 4.2L from the LWB and prepare it for this build, as an upgrade from the stock 3.9L of the SWB. We tore it down and soda blasted all engine components, then resealed and built the engine with a custom camshaft. The heads received a three-angle valve job, new valve seals, premium Elring head gaskets, and a new genuine timing chain and gears. We coupled this with a ZF4 HP Transmission rebuilt with new internals, with the torque convertor cut, rebuilt, and resealed as well. Behind that we finished with a rebuilt Borg Warner transfer box. A full drivetrain swap, fresh paint, and a million new parts have given this Classic a totally new lease on life. With its large, up-built engine, this classic has a lot more power than the enthusiast will be used to, yet well mannered while on the road.
Pull the bonnet release, recently reset to factory spec, and under bonnet you will also find a rebuilt Magnetti Marelli alternator, new starter, new fuel pump in the rear, refinished pulleys, new serpentine tensioner, all new genuine cooling hoses, new oil pump, replaced A/C condenser, a new Interstate MT-34 Battery and Full NRP Performance Catalyst installed by our expert techs. There are also new genuine plugs and wires, filters and a performance ECU. We went ahead and added new calipers, discs, and pads on the rear axle to bring the rear axle up to spec.
When we painted the truck we rebuilt the door interiors with some new window lifts and adjusted the pop tension on the door pulls back to factory spec. It should be known that to paint a classic properly all the doors and exterior panels need to be removed. This is labor intensive but important and allows the rebuilder to address any and all outstanding issues on the body during reconstruction. During this process we also installed new outer door seals. This allows the vehicle to effectively seal out noise and water. We added clear 120-4 Waxoyl to the door interiors to prevent corrosion, and the entire underside of the vehicle has been coated in black hardwax. After paint we applied Waxoyl to the underside of the cowling and various parts of the engine bay that are prone to corrosion, and since all body panels came off for paint, we were able to address everything.
The Duke received refinished rear louvers and rear carpet section, and some interior and exterior trim replaced and also a new refinished headliner. This truck has a Beluga Black ARB bumper with a freshly lubed Warn winch and an aluminum skid plate on the front, as well as a custom bumper on the rear. With new powder-coated rock sliders and painted black wheels, body color bumper and on or off-road abilities, there’s a reason they call it “The Best 4x4xFar”. The Duke had its freshly painted rims wrapped in new BF Goodrich 245/75/16 TA KO tires. With a 2” body lift, and ARB bumper this truck has an impressionable stance on the curb, the trail or the beach. This vehicle is ideal for inroad use, with its command seating and a strong presence. New L322 RANGE ROVER badges give this Classic a sharp modern look while maintaining the iconic lines of the classic Range Rover models.
We rehung the tailgate, installing new Congleton Service lift-gate tabs along the way. Our techs installed a new lift-gate assembly, with new struts and handle with locking mechanism. We replaced the outer lenses on the vehicle, and all new stainless hardware was installed throughout the exterior of the vehicle. Our techs welded two spots on the floor, the typical spots where the factory steel was of low quality in all models, sealed the weld with seam sealer, and painted both sides, the underside being treated with Waxoyl to prevent further corrosion. Our techs painted the entire interior floor of the vehicle as a precaution, allowing the paint to cure for three days before replacing the interior. The rest of the vehicles underbody is pretty clean, with a few spots seeing some mild surface corrosion, as is expected with this vintage of Rover.
This Congleton Service 1995 Range Rover Classic has had extensive work done, but was not completely disassembled like our Congleton Certified Restorations. We believe it will make a great Rover for someone who has always wanted a nice classic. With only 124k miles and a new drivetrain we are confident the vehicle is ready to be enjoyed.
We encourage all buyers to come see the vehicle in person prior to purchase, as its important to understand that at the end of the day, you’re still considering purchasing a 22-23 year old Land Rover, and it does have its flaws and is being sold as-is without a warranty. Here at Congleton Service we like to name our builds after rescued dogs that we are able to help. This build reminded us of our most recent rescue, The Duke, a Redbone Coon Hound from Colchester, Vermont. Just like Duke, we found this Range Rover in a barn, and like The Duke, it was in kind of rough shape, but nothing that some love and attention couldn’t solve. We purchased this vehicle along with its “sister” another 1995 Range Rover Classic SWB in Alpine White from a Land Rover Collector in New York State. Although the vehicles weren’t in pristine condition, we knew they were solid candidates to get the treatment and become a Congleton Classic.
